YEAR OF THE WATER SNAKE: The snake symbolises the character traits of intelligence, gratefulness and materialism.

According to the ancient Chinese zodiac, people born in the same year all share similar characteristics. There are 12 animals present in the Chinese calendar; each represents a year, and is repeated over a 12 year cycle.

In addition to the 12 animal signs of the Chinese zodiac, each one is accompanied by a particular element: earth, metal, fire, water and wood. This year, from the Chinese new year - which begins on February 10 - it's the year of the water snake.

Here's a summary of what's in store for babies born in the year of the snake, according to the Chinese zodiac.

Personality

The snake is the sixth position in the zodiac and symbolises the character traits of intelligence, gratefulness and materialism. As a result, you can look forward to having a smart, appreciative person that likes to have nice things.

When it comes to decision-making, your child may be a little over-analytical. Snakes are also very effective in getting their own way, even if they have to scheme to get it.

Snakes aren't great communicators, and you might find that your child is often contemplative, private, and not outwardly emotional. But water snakes can be very affectionate with those they're close to, such as family members.

Health

Snakes prefer calm and quietness over noise, and need plenty of time for rest and relaxation. They need a manageable schedule, instead of an over-packed, busy calendar, or they get too stressed.

As they get older, a healthy work/life balance is essential for snakes to live a long and healthy life.

Career

Snakes are hard-working but get bored easily, so they find it hard to stay in one job. Their laid-back attitude can be misunderstood as lazy, which is far from the truth - they're actually quite motivated and determined once they set their mind to it.

According to the Chinese zodiac, your little snake will be creative, diligent and thrive under pressure. As a result, careers such as scientist, analyst, painter, jeweller, magician, dietician and sociologist seem to be common among people born in the year of the snake.

Water snakes, in particular, are good at managing others.

Relationships

Those born in the year of the snake won't have any trouble attracting a partner, but once they're in a relationship their insecurities may become visible. Snake people have a tendency to be jealous, obsessive and don't like to talk about their feelings.
